David Levine ("doc") (Dawda Marong)

David Levine, D.O., R.N.
Dr. Levine is an American physician, board-certified in family practice, who came to The Gambia early in 2006. For a year he volunteered as Senior Medical Officer in the Accident & Emergency Department of the Royal Victoria Teaching Hospital in the capitol, Banjul, the main hospital in the country. He was adopted by a Mandinka family and has spent extended periods living with the people both in the city and the villages. His experiences in the hospital and the villages showed him how the people suffer and led him to found West Africa Medicine and Education. David lives in Kafountine, in Senegal's Casamance, an hour south of the Gambian border, and in the Mississippi Delta, where he has been working serving the underserved. (The baby he is holding was named for him in a remote village in Mali.)
